Martino Gamper — The Arnold Circus Stool
About
A small book about one piece of furniture: the stool Martino Gamper designed in 2006 for Arnold Circus in East London.
Arnold Circus lies in Shoreditch, within the Boundary Estate, which was the first council housing built in London and stands on the rubble of former slums. Gamper's stool, rotation-moulded in plastic, was made as seating for the events that brought a disused public space back into use: picnics, brass band concerts, carrom tournaments, planting days, music and film. From there it spread to art centres abroad and into homes as far away as New Zealand and Korea. The book follows that story through Gamper and the friends around him.
Gamper edited the book with Åbäke, who also designed it. Cornelia Parker, Robin Hatton-Gore, Anna Salaman, Alex Klein and Michael Marriott are among the writers. Printed by SYL in Spain.
