Viscose — Issue 7: Scent
About
The seventh issue of Viscose, Jeppe Ugelvig's journal of fashion criticism, given over to scent and perfume.
The starting point is that fashion has always had a smell. Fragrance moved along the oldest trade routes together with cloth, and smell is still tied to ideas of cleanliness, gender, race and class. The issue looks at projects by artists and designers that use smell as a material, at the making, selling and branding of fragrance, and at its place in desire, identity and memory. Running through it is the question of how something as atmospheric as scent can be put into words at all.
The issue was produced with the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale of 2024, where Koo Jeong A showed Odorama Cities, and with Oslo's International Library of Fashion Research. Among the contributors are Sissel Tolaas, Maki Ueda, Derek McCormack, Whitney Mallett, Hsuan L. Hsu, Elise by Olsen and Davide Stucchi.
