Jonathan Faiers — The Sound of Fashion Thinking
About
A walk through an imagined fashion exhibition where every room holds sound rather than clothes.
Faiers sets out Fashion Thinking as a field of critical inquiry that uses the ways fashion is produced as its method, and applies it to questions of culture, politics, economics and society. He goes back to an older meaning of fashion as the act of making, and to cloth that becomes a coat and can later be taken apart and cut into something else. Fashion Thinking changes its voice with each topic, moving between poetry and analysis, autobiography, technical writing and discursive essay. It aims past interdisciplinary work, toward a position that sits between fields or ignores them altogether.
The book is written as the guide to that exhibition. Each chapter is a room, and the sounds heard there prompt reflections on how fashion is made, received, spread and developed.
