Stephen Shore — The Mental Image
About
Stephen Shore, The Mental Image, MACK, 2026
Stephen Shore on what happens before the picture is taken.
The Mental Image looks at how photographs are imagined, sensed and carried in the body. Shore gathers anecdotes, influences, references and lessons on visualisation, attention and embodiment, and shows how they change the way we see. It is practical and philosophical at once.
It follows The Nature of Photographs from 2013 and Modern Instances: The Craft of Photography from 2022. Shore has directed the photography programme at Bard College since 1982.
Joel Sternfeld called it a "bracing inquiry". Shore launched the book in October 2026 in conversation with James Willing at Rizzoli Bookstore in New York.
Paperback, 112 pages, 21 by 24.5 cm, illustrated. English. Available online and in our shop at Vester Voldgade 106, Copenhagen.
