Jerry Hsu — How About Never
About
Photographs of Los Angeles that Jerry Hsu has taken since 2011, looking at a city that seems almost to have a mind of its own.
Hsu is a Taiwanese-American professional skateboarder who has photographed alongside his skating for many years; his first photobook, The Killing Season, came out in 2013 in an edition of 150. Here his pictures hold opposites together, hope beside despair and beauty beside pain. Broken fences and injured bodies sit next to things met by chance on the street: a dumped toilet, a mattress stained with blood, wrecked cars, a bank on fire.
The portraits get close to their sitters in the middle of the city's neglect and harshness, and the sequence as a whole treats destruction as something that can lead to change and renewal.
Featured in i-D, Cultured and Highsnobiety, and chosen by W magazine as one of the best art books of 2026.
