Teju Cole — Golden Apple of the Sun
About
Five weeks of daily photographs of a single kitchen counter, taken in the run-up to the 2020 US election.
The counter is in Cole's own kitchen in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The pictures belong to a still-life tradition reaching back through Dutch painting, Chardin and Cézanne, and on to the photographers Jan Groover and Laura Letinsky, but where those artists arranged their subjects, Cole left the bowls and plates wherever chance put them.
A long essay runs alongside the pictures, taking in hunger and fasting, mourning, intimacy and slavery, poetry and painting, and photography's own history. An anonymous cookbook from eighteenth-century Cambridge, written out by hand, is threaded through both the essay and the picture sequences.
