Shiro Kuramata & Ettore Sottsass
About
Shiro Kuramata & Ettore Sottsass, ADP
A Japanese designer and an Italian one, who met through Memphis in the early 1980s.
In 2011, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in Tokyo showed the two together for the first time. Issey Miyake planned the exhibition and Yasuko Seki directed it. It had 65 pieces of Kuramata furniture, from the 1980s to his death in 1991, next to late work by Sottsass, arranged by material.
It opened on 2 February 2011. After the earthquake in March it was extended to 18 July, and Sottsass's Valentine typewriter and his Solaris were added.
This is the book of the show, printed in 2010 ahead of the opening. There are texts by Tadao Ando, Toyo Ito, Sottsass himself, Barbara Radice, Kenji Oki and Taira Nishizawa, photographs of Kuramata's interiors, most of which no longer exist, notes on his ideas and materials, a list of works and a profile of each designer. Tamotsu Yagi did the art direction.
Miyake called Kuramata "a hero for us in the sixties".
