About

Issue 28 of Racquet, the tennis magazine published in New York, turns to architecture and art, starting from the 78 by 36 foot rectangle of the court.

Brutalism turns up throughout. The architect and photographer Martina Rosati photographs the courts at London's Barbican, and the design writer Rachel Davies looks at buildings ranging from a new rammed-earth public tennis centre in Los Cabos to the pink modernist Neuendorf House on Mallorca. For the cover story, A Playable Feast, the writer Vital Villarrubia and the photographer Letizia Cigliutti visit courts at Belmond hotels in Italy, Spain and Portugal.

On the art side, Beau Dealy meets Reilly Opelka, now a serious art collector, and hears from Tim Van Laere and the artist Friedrich Kunath about their TVLG ART x TENNIS CLUB. Ezequiel Olvera profiles the Los Angeles painter Alex Chaves, and Morgan Mason reads tennis into Empire of the Sun. Nick Pachelli, who grew up nearby, visits the Santa Fe adobe house and purpose-built court of Gladys Heldman, publisher of World Tennis and a driving force behind the Virginia Slims circuit. Tennis dreamscapes by the illustrator Alonso Guzmán Baron close the issue.
