Privilege: An Yvonne Rainer Filmography

A filmography of the seven feature films Yvonne Rainer directed between the early 1970s and the mid-1990s.

Rainer, born in 1934, reshaped choreography in the 1960s, then spent two decades making films that are densely argued and sit between fiction, documentary, performance and the avant-garde without belonging wholly to any of them. For many years they were hard to see, and when they were shown it was often on small monitors in museum galleries.

From 6 to 28 November 2024, Terrassen presented the films, newly restored in 4K, in a retrospective at Palads Cinema in Copenhagen. No retrospective of this kind had been held in Denmark before. Terrassen edited this book as an appendix to the retrospective, and it followed in 2025, with contributions from Emily LaBarge, Babette Mangolte, Amelia Groom, Emily Wardill, Ursula Andkjær Olsen, Valérie Massadian, Mira Adoumier, Iman Mohammed and Frida Sandström, and from Rainer herself. The design is by Hans Munk.
