Exhibiting for Multiple Senses: Art and Curating for Sensory-Diverse Bodies
About
A book about exhibitions that reach beyond sight, and about opening them to visitors whose senses and bodies work in different ways.
Eva Fotiadi edited the book. It brings curatorial theory and research from museums together with disability activism and crip theory. It follows the echoes that run between the theory and the practice of curating, as well as among disability, neurodivergence and crip activism in art. The examples include well-known and little-known experimental exhibitions, and artistic practices tied to them. Some work through touch, smell, taste or hearing, some use multimodal technology, and some take their lead from neuroscience.
Contributors are David Bobier, Luca M. Damiani, Stephanie Farmer and Hettie James, David Gissen and Georgina Kleege, Adi Hollander, Lilian Korner, Elke Krasny, Renata Pękowska and Caro Verbeek, with a text by Fotiadi. The book belongs to Valiz's PLURAL series and was made with the Avans Centre of Applied Research for Art, Design and Technology (CARADT) in Breda. Lotte Lara Schröder designed it, and it is illustrated in black and white.
