Mindy Seu — A Sexual History of the Internet
About
An artist book by Mindy Seu that doubles as the script for her lecture-performance on the ways sex and technology have shaped each other.
The project comes in two parts, a performance and a book. At each performance the audience holds the script on their phones and reads the citations aloud together. Seu first tried out this lecture format with Julio Correa in her autumn 2023 studio course at the Yale School of Art, and performances have been scheduled through 2025 and 2026 in cities including New York, London, Tokyo and Sydney. The book gathers the anecdotes, artworks and historical material behind it. Seu, born in 1991, teaches in the Department of Design Media Arts at UCLA; her earlier book is Cyberfeminism Index (2023).
Laura Coombs took the iPhone and the proverbial little black book as her two models for the design. The book is palm-sized, its cover is black vinyl leather and its 704 black pages are printed in silver ink. Meg Miller edited the text. It is the Dark Forest Collective's third book, released through Metalabel, and under a model called Citational Splits, 30% of the profits are shared among the 45 people it cites.
The Dark Forest Collective, 2025. 704 pages, leatherbound paperback, 8.5 x 14.5 cm. First edition of 5,000 copies.
