Upstate Diary — Issue 22

Issue 22 of Upstate Diary, the twice-yearly magazine the photographer Kate Orne started in 2014, published in 2026 under the theme "Unmistakably Organic".

Its subjects are artists, musicians and designers who have chosen to live and work close to nature, away from expensive cities, and it looks at how a rural life feeds the creative process. The magazine began in the Hudson Valley but ranges well beyond it, and its profiles dwell on people and how they work rather than on careers or the market.

The portraits in this issue include Carroll Dunham, Mark Dion, Ellen Altfest, Julie Hamisky, Jean-Guillaume Mathiaut, Deborah Needleman, Frances Palmer, Jim Denevan, Bill Katz, the poet Naomi Shihab Nye and the late Barkley Hendricks.
