Sterling Ruby & Raf Simons — Beyond the Collaboration
About
Sterling Ruby & Raf Simons, Beyond the Collaboration, Sternberg Press, 2018
An artist and a fashion designer talk through more than ten years of working together.
On 23 April 2018 Sterling Ruby and Raf Simons sat down at the Harvard Graduate School of Design with Jessica Morgan, then director of Dia Art Foundation, for the school's Rouse Visiting Artist Lecture. Simons was at Calvin Klein at the time. This small book is that conversation.
Their history runs long. Ruby designed the interior of Simons's Tokyo store in 2008. Fabrics in Simons's first couture collection for Dior, in 2012, came from Ruby's paintings. In 2014 they showed a joint menswear collection under both names, and at Calvin Klein Ruby hung the first show with patchwork sacks made from American flags.
It is the seventh title in The Incidents, the school's series on uncommon events at the GSD, and Åbäke designed it. Jennifer Sigler and Leah Whitman-Salkin edited it, with an introduction by Sean Canty.
The publisher calls it "a story, and an exchange, that is beyond collaboration".
