Juergen Teller — Siegerflieger
About
Juergen Teller's photographic diary of summer 2014 and Germany's World Cup victory in Brazil.
The title means "the victors' plane", the name by which the German squad's specially adapted aircraft was known. Teller, a football fanatic, follows the title win through his own summer: bratwurst and chess with his family in Bubenreuth, livelier hours with his students at the Nuremberg Academy of Fine Arts, the final watched at a Portuguese restaurant in London and the national team welcomed at the Brandenburg Gate. His son Ed, caught up in the same football fever, is the quiet star of the series, and Teller marked the title with a tattoo on his upper arm.
Fashion is almost absent. Stella Tennant appears in Teller's trainers and a pair of Germany team underpants that Teller's mother had picked up at a supermarket, and the same underwear turns up on other people throughout the book.
The German national team had featured in Teller's work before, notably in Nackig auf dem Fußballplatz, which Steidl published in 2004. Teller designed the book with Peter Miles.
