Marina Abramović & Ulay — No Predicted End
About
A book drawn from the last conversation between Marina Abramović and Ulay, filmed by Kasper Bech Dyg for Louisiana Channel.
The two artists met on 30 November 1975, the birthday they shared, and from 1976 to 1988 they were a couple and made work together, including Relation in Space, Rest Energy and Nightsea Crossing. Their last joint performance, in 1988, was a 4,000 km walk along the Great Wall of China, each setting out from one end, which ended not in the marriage once planned but in their parting. They saw each other again during Abramović's The Artist Is Present in 2010, and were in a legal dispute over rights in 2015.
Thirty years after they separated, they agreed to meet for the film, and in August 2018 spent ten days talking at Abramović's house in upstate New York. Bech Dyg directed, edited and produced the film, released by Louisiana Channel at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in 2022. The two go back over the performances of their twelve years together, what the relationship cost them both, why they could not carry on, and the work that remains. Ulay died in 2020. The book is by Bech Dyg.
