MacGuffin — Issue 15: The Stitch
About
The fifteenth issue of MacGuffin, the Amsterdam biannual that gives each issue to a single everyday thing, is about the stitch and marks the magazine's tenth year.
The subject is followed through textiles, technology, scars, seams, bookbinding, buildings, leather and language. There is a guide to individual stitches and what each is used for, a history of tatreez, the hand embroidery of Palestinian dress, and pieces on the needlepoint of the American football player Rosey Grier, Romanian blouses, Japanese kites, Bronze Age bog patterns, seamstresses and the Maison Margiela logo. Artists include Ilona Keserü, with her textile work, and Kader Attia, with his collages.
Contributors include Tanveer Ahmed, Rachel Dedman, Jessica Hemmings, Emily King, Rosa Menkman and Scheltens & Abbenes. Edited by Kirsten Algera and Ernst van der Hoeven, designed by Sandra Kassenaar.
