Coffee Pots from the Masters
About
A small bilingual book on the moka pot, edited by Giulio Iacchetti, showing twenty-four versions of the stovetop coffee maker.
The moka, which brews coffee by steam pressure, was invented in the first half of the twentieth century and has become bound up with everyday Italian life. The book begins with Alfonso Bialetti's classic design and follows the variations that architects and designers have made on it, among them Ettore Sottsass, Alessandro Mendini, Marco Zanuso, Angelo Mangiarotti, Gaetano Pesce, Michele De Lucchi, Piero Lissoni, Tom Dixon and Isao Hosoe, as well as King-Kong Design. Seen together, they suggest that the moka is almost an obligatory exercise in a designer's career.
For Iacchetti the coffee pot is both ritual and symbol, a democratic object in which form and function meet. The book is printed on Crush Caffè, a Favini paper in which by-products from coffee processing replace up to 15 per cent of the tree cellulose.
