Going Out: Walking, Listening, Soundmaking
About
A long study of walking as a way of listening and making sound, followed by an anthology of the artists and writers who have practised it.
Elena Biserna follows the practice from the soundwalks and roaming performances of the 1960s to the many walking-based projects of today, tracing how musicians and artists left the concert hall and the institution for public space, landscape and social and political life. Her essay opens the book. The anthology that follows collects scores, manifestos, interviews, essays, documentation, stories and reflections by more than forty contributors, among them Max Neuhaus, Janet Cardiff, Hildegard Westerkamp, Akio Suzuki, Adrian Piper, Christina Kubisch, Christine Sun Kim, Ultra-red and LIGNA, with writing by Tim Ingold and Brandon LaBelle.
Biserna edited the book with Julia Eckhardt, Henry Andersen and Caroline Profanter for umland editions, the imprint of Q-O2, a Brussels workspace for experimental music and sound art. Design by Ines Cox.
