Giorgio Morandi — Late Paintings
About
Giorgio Morandi, Late Paintings, David Zwirner Books, 2017
The still lifes Giorgio Morandi painted from 1948 until his death in 1964.
More than half of all his paintings date from those years. David Zwirner showed them in New York from 6 November to 19 December 2015, the first big American show of his late work since the Metropolitan Museum's retrospective in 2008, with loans from the National Gallery of Art in Washington. The book followed in 2017, with a foreword by David Leiber, who organised the show.
Five of the ten yellow cloth paintings of 1952 are here. Each has three to five bottles on a table, gathered around a crumpled yellow cloth.
Laura Mattioli wrote the essay. Eight artists add short texts: John Baldessari, Lawrence Carroll, Vija Celmins, Mark Greenwold, Liu Ye, Wayne Thiebaud, Alexi Worth and Zeng Fanzhi.
The New York Times found "lucid perfection, at once cerebral and impassioned".
Hardcover, 96 pages, 22.9 by 26.7 cm, 33 colour and 2 black and white illustrations. English. Printed in Verona. Available online and in our shop at Vester Voldgade 106, Copenhagen.
