Richard Serra — Early Work
About
Five years at the start of Serra's career, 1966 to 1971, when he made sculpture from vulcanized rubber, neon and lead.
Published for Serra's 2013 show at David Zwirner, New York, and made with the artist's close involvement. Most of the plates are black-and-white (175 tritone, 19 colour), and they include both installation views and documentary photographs. Next to the rubber, neon and lead pieces are early works in steel and stills from several of his early films.
Critical writing and reviews on Serra from the period are collected here with a new text by the critic and art historian Hal Foster. He writes of the "verticality and horizontality" in these works, which stayed central to Serra's sculpture in the decades that followed.
Steidl and David Zwirner, 2013. 340 pages, hardcover, 24.1 x 30.5 cm. English.
