Donald Judd — The Low Countries 1966–1971
About
A study by the art historian Wouter Davidts of how Donald Judd's work was first received in Belgium and the Netherlands.
The usual account of Judd's early career is an American one. Davidts turns to Europe instead, following Judd from a group exhibition in Stockholm, at the Moderna Museet, to his 1970 solo exhibition in Eindhoven, at the Van Abbemuseum. Working from Belgian and Dutch archives, he shows that critics and museums in the Low Countries were paying serious attention to Judd in the same years he was still settling his artistic language at home.
At the centre of the book is a 1970 interview Judd gave to Belgian Radio and Television (BRT), printed here for the first time. The text is richly annotated and illustrated in colour and black and white. Davidts teaches at Ghent University, where he leads KB45, a research group on art in Belgium since 1945, and the book is the first volume of its KB45 Cahiers series.
