Daido Moriyama — Tales of Tono
About
A facsimile, with English text, of Daido Moriyama's 1976 photobook made in the countryside around Tono in northern Honshu.
The title looks back to The Legends of Tono, the 119 short folk tales of the district that Kunio Yanagita published in 1910, and Moriyama had wanted for years to go there with a camera. His pictures find cars, telegraph poles and vending machines in a place that has kept its rural character, with traces of an older past never far away.
At the back, Moriyama writes at length about the journey and about the 'original landscape' of memory he had been looking for all his life. Simon Baker, then curator of photography at Tate, adds a short afterword, and Lena Fritsch translated the text. Tate Publishing first issued the English edition in London in 2012, the year Tate Modern opened William Klein Daido Moriyama; this D.A.P. issue, published with Tate, followed in January 2013.
D.A.P. with Tate, 2013. 192 pages with 16 colour pages and 76 duotone plates, paperback, 11.4 x 17.1 cm.
