Bruno Munari — Design as (Programmed) Art
About
A small bilingual study of how Bruno Munari carried the rules of arte programmata into his graphic design.
David Reinfurt, the graphic designer who co-founded The Serving Library, looks at the projects where Munari treated a page or a poster as a system that could keep changing. He follows the idea through type, layout and colour, with examples from the 1960s and 1970s: the Campari poster Munari made for the Milan metro, and the covers he drew up for the publishers Einaudi and Bompiani.
The book belongs to I Quaderni di Spazio Munari, a Corraini series of short research volumes made together with Spazio Munari. Reinfurt first showed the material in New York at the Printed Matter art book fair at MoMA PS1, and a larger exhibition followed at Careof in Milan's Fabbrica del Vapore in January 2026. Designed by Jason Fulford, with colour and black-and-white illustrations.
