ARCHIVIO — Issue 11: The Tech Issue
About
The eleventh issue of Archivio, the Turin magazine about archives published by Promemoria Group, devoted to the history of technology.
The guest editors are Massimo Banzi, a co-founder of Arduino, and Cecilia Botta, a technology historian and Promemoria Group's Head of Memories. They look at how the technology world, in business and in universities, keeps or neglects its own past, and at the institutions and private collectors who look after what survives. The issue is in three parts: Stories, Institutions, and Collectors & Collectives.
Picture inventories of chips, monitors and game controllers sit beside pages of ASCII art. Other pieces follow the Californian counterculture of the 1970s into the making of Silicon Valley, consider Olivetti's part in shaping interface design, show photographs of Steve Jobs from Apple's early years and look back at Bit, the first computer magazine in Italy.
The cover, by the artist Ailadi, is drawn in PETSCII, the character set that Commodore built into its 8-bit computers. A fold-out poster of 43 x 60 cm maps Italy's technology archives, from research by Promemoria Group given visual form by Accurat. Editorial direction is by Daniela Hamaui, art direction by Alessandro Gori.
